You need a custom veil, I promise
Another day and another amazing Raleigh Wedding planner vendor spotlight for today’s Wedding Wednesday. I’m over joyed to share with you a special vendor… a vendor that most often gets overlooked for uniqueness when it comes to your wedding attire…THE BRIDAL VEIL… I’d have to say a lot of brides buy off the rack because it’s either more convenient or cheaper… I am here to say it’s not. In fact, while researching vintage veils I came across this amazing designer who makes custom veil to your style, theme and most of YOU. I reached out Olivia Thistle through Etsy to see how the process works when ordering their gorgeous veil.
Of course they have many pre-made designs to choose from at the same cost as your local David’s Bridal shop but, I was looking for something stunning but elegant and true to the theme. I was concern we weren’t gonna have enough time, but to my surprise, the ordering process was pretty easy. All I did was send Olivia Thistle a photograph of the dress and some original looks from the early 20th century and let the designing begin. I just can’t wait for the day the package arrives. It will truly be Christmas for me in July.
I started to think how Olivia Thistle began… I mean I have a design background myself and never even thought about wedding veils and accessories… So emailed I WILLIAM DRUMMOND, owner and lead designer of Olivia Thistle to see if he’d mind answering a few questions… Of course the nice guy he is, he took a few minute to chat…
Jax: I am so curious…. How did you get started in the fashion business?
Olivia Thistle: I studied at FIT and Parsons and graduated from FIT with a BFA in Fashion Design. While studying, I worked in the industry with private clients and also interned at Tom Ford, Marchesa, K-mart and Thakoon. Last year I freelanced with Theory, focusing on helping them with designing more evening wear and special occasion pieces.
Jax: Oh my god, I am so jealous… TOM FORD… My dream was to intern in NYC when I graduated school, but it’s hard industry for sure… So clearly you have formal training…. FIT and Parsons… those are some great colleges.
Jax: How long have you been designing custom and pre-made veils?
Olivia Thistle: Whilst working in the industry I found myself continually accepting commissions from brides in designing their dresses and veils and began to become more and more interested in the world of brides. I found that the already given palate of whites and ivories made the creative process easier and I was able to focus more on the details that are so important when designing bridal.
Jax: I absolutely agree…. Details are important whether in the appeal or your tablescape… It all matters…. Now I found you on Etsy, however, where can brides find your collection?
Olivia Thistle: Right now, I am mainly Etsy based, but you can see more at www.oliviathistle.com and I love hearing from brides who are looking for something special for their big day.
Jax: How does a custom veil process go?
Olivia Thistle: Every bride is different in what they want and the “look” they are going for, that it is really important for me to work with them to create something truly unique that embodies who they are. I find it such a wonderful and creative challenge to make something different each time and it keeps me on my toes. The process is different for each bride, however if you have something in mind like a photograph, your dress selection, color pallet, etc… we can start there.
Jax: When should the bride order their custom veil?
Olivia Thistle: For some brides they like to use the veil as the main direction point, and build the rest of the look from there, but for others it is more of a complement to the dress and less of a focus point. It’s also great to see how versatile a veil can be, as a lot of the pieces I create can be worn with or without the actual veil, and instead the jewels/headpiece etc… can be worn later at the reception to keep the look pulled together.
Jax: Is there any advice you can give our readers, to help when choosing you over a store bought veil?
Olivia Thistle: When buying a custom veil, you are able to get exactly what you want and also know that no-one else is going to have that piece, as it is made just for you. It adds another level of uniqueness to your big day and the fact that you are the only bride who will be wearing your piece is something that the generic bridal stores just can’t compete with!
Jax: I agree…. Hence the reason I was searching for something custom…. Thank you so much William for chatting with us. I can’t wait till the package arrives. Less than a month and I’ll get to see this beautiful one-of-a-kind piece that I know will be breath taking.
