Remembering your special day
Happy Hump day ya’ll, I can’t believe were almost ½ way through the month and only five days away from the style shoot of the year. I am so excited to finally have the opportunity to work with such amazing wedding professionals local and afar. I am excited to share with you another vendor from our Spotlight series.
One vendor in particular is a pure blessing to have part of your special day. I’m not talking about photographers all though I absolutely love them, but a videographer. So important to have someone to capture your vows and be able to watch years to come.
Looking back last year when I got married, I wished I hired a videographer especially Jon Warlick media. I am so excited they chose to collaborate with Party Designs by Jax on our vintage style shoot. I just love their views on love and you will too.
Jax: What led you to weddings, specifically, and how long have you been in the industry?
Jon: I say 3 years. I’ve always loved taking pictures as a kid but it wasn’t until 2013 when I finally bought my camera. I was mostly doing night and landscape photography then one day, a friend of mine who does wedding photos asked me if I wanted to second-shoot for her in 2014 that was my introduction to the wedding industry.
Jax: Tell me a bit about the person behind the job and how you became a wedding videographer.
Jon: I did wedding photos very sporadically until Fall 2016, my co-workers’ son was getting married and asked me if I would like to film that wedding. I saw it as a challenge and opportunity at the same time so I said yes. As with everything I do, I researched all that I can about filming weddings and found that I loved doing wedding films more than taking photos, catching raw emotions, the glimpse of a look, a soft smile and making sure that those moments are captured in motion.
Jax: What do you love most about being a wedding videographer?
Jon: What I love most about being a wedding videographer is that I am able to tell a story as it unfolds in front of me, it’s like a Rom-Com movie but even better because no one is given a script and all the feelings and emotions are real and that’s something that makes it even more priceless.
Jax: Tell me about your most memorable and fun wedding.
Jon: The most memorable for sure was the three-day Indian wedding we filmed back in March 2017. We were there for countless ceremonies and rituals that we were experiencing for the first time as well as tons of interesting food and flashy clothes. The people were so friendly and they were all in happy, festive moods. That wedding is definitely one we will remember forever!
Jax: What does a typical wedding day look like for you?
Jon: Typically, we are with the couple from the beginning of the day to the end. We start by filming the venue from the air and the ground as it is being prepared. We document the “getting ready” process and get interviews, gift-giving, or letter reading at this time. Sometimes there are first looks. The most crucial parts of the day are the ceremonies and all of the nuanced emotions we try to capture. The speeches are some more of our favorite moments. Then we get to have lots of fun filming all the dancing and sometimes we can’t help but dance a bit ourselves! After the couple exits we usually have more than enough footage to create a beautiful love story film!
Jax: How does the editing process go, I have always been curious?
Jon: After the event we will move the footage from all of our SD cards; from the cameras and the drone and the audio recorders. Then we will load them all into Final Cut Pro X. It’s helpful when the devices have been set to the same time and date for chronological reasons. Syncing up the multi camera sequences with off camera audio is next. Then I’ll build a small story for the trailer. Most of it involved building anticipation through scenes of the empty venue and detail shots so you are slowly introduced to the couple. After that, it’s just a matter of creating unique emotional sequences. I like to make the audience feel excited, happy, bittersweet, humorous and above all; the feeling of being in love!
Jax: Can you give our readers 3 top tips when choosing a videographer?
Jon: Don’t choose a videographer based on the price alone. A team that creates great videos will be worth a high price but make sure it fits your budget and gives you the quality you want. Second, the couple should try to meet every vendor in person to make sure they are the right fit firsthand. Lastly, if you meet your videographers and they are the kind of people you’d love to have as friends and make you feel good to be around them, you have made the right choice!
I just love those tips… I will make sure to add them to my list too. Thank you so much for letting me get to know you. I can’t wait till next Tuesday, it’s such a blessing to have to part of the team and can’t wait to see your magic.
