Congratulations, you have been dreaming of this day since you were little. You probably imagined your dream dress, gorgeous flowers, and the perfect person. Well you found them, now it’s time to make your dream a reality.
Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows, costs can add up quickly. One of the most important aspects of planning your wedding is coming up with a budget; which can be daunting and overwhelming. Let’s be honest that’s the last thing you want after saying yes is dealing with expenses. Budgeting doesn’t have all the glitz and glamour of picking that perfect wedding dress.
Whether your parents are generously paying or you are using your hard earned savings, every Bride is on some sort of budget. It’s important to know when to splurge and where to save with organization; trust me, you will have a lot less headaches and stress. The best advice I can give is to use an excel spreadsheet that helps allocate your budget and tracks your spending. I created one to help me with my wedding, and I use it for all my bride and grooms. You can download it for free here Wedding allocator & budget tool(contact me if you need an editable version)
In the meantime, below are few good tips for pinching pennies…
One Your Guest list
I know, I know, you want to spend this special day with the world, however your cost per head is your biggest expense. You need to figure out your fixed costs – the cost that doesn’t change with the number of guests i.e. location rentals, music, photography, video, officiant, etc. At that point you can estimate the costs that will fluctuate – including food, alcohol, flowers, invitations, and cake. Don’t fill the room with virtual strangers out of obligation, invite guest that matter and surround the room with people you care about and love.
Two The Time of Day
Best way to save on costs is having your wedding earlier in the day. A plated dinner and buffets are more expensive than a Brunch, Afternoon tea, or heavy hors d’oeuvres. You also drink more at night then say the early afternoon. Wedding Brunches are widely popular, and you get to spend more time together alone on your wedding night.
Three Weekday vs. Saturday
You found the perfect venue. It’s everything you dreamed of for your Big Day. You are over the moon excited, and then your estimate comes and it’s 2x the cost of your budget. Do you splurge or look somewhere else? Ask about weekday pricing. Typically vendors lower their fees for weekday and Sunday events. You can still have your dream venue at a fraction of the cost.
Four For go the Champagne
All though it’s a lovely tradition, Champagne is the first item I cut to save on cost. Why, because it’s costly and most of the bubbly gets thrown away because your guest only took a sip. For an alternative, use a sparkling wine or just have your guest toast with what they are drinking at the time.
Five No Need for Favors
I find that couples spend far too much money on impersonal trinkets and most of them get thrown away or forgotten. If your budget is tight use the money somewhere else, drop the idea and never look back! As a nice alternative, write a personal note to each guest thanking them for coming, or use your budget for Welcome Bags. I find welcome gifts for out-of-town guest a necessity. These guests should not have to spend money at the hotel for a midnight snack after spending money on plane ticket & more. They don’t have to be anything fancy, just a bag with water, sweet & salty snacks.
I hope you find these money saving tips helpful, and remember there is no need to go broke to have the Wedding of your dreams.
