Capturing your day
When planning a style shoot and wedding, it’s very important to make sure you have plenty of time for shooting. One thing I learned from my first one back in January, you can’t have enough photographers for your special day. With that said…. We are so lucky to have Melissa Holleman Photography join our team for Capturing your day.
I first met Melissa through my best friend. I fell in love with some portraits she done for her business and had to know her photographer. Ever since I have been trying to have Melissa capture the same spirit as she done with Camara.
I am so excited to have this opportunity and can’t wait to see what she captures not only with the styling but our brand shots too.
I asked Melissa a few questions to understand her, her business and style as a photographer…
Jax: How did you get into photography? Are you self-taught or formally trained?
Melissa: To make a long story short my love for photography began with my first child. She is a dancer (that competes) so in order for me to get any great images of her I had to learn to use a DSLR. Dance photography does not allow flash so I taught myself how to use my camera. Once I caught the bug I began to practice photography on friends and family, and 7 years in I still love every minute of it.
Jax: How did you get into wedding photography specifically?
Melissa: After I felt confident in my skills using manual settings on my camera I took on my first wedding. I belong to a Facebook group full of wonderful local photographers and someone posted a lower budget wedding needing a photographer. I took the job and luckily for
Jax: Describe your style in one sentence.
Melissa: I would describe my style as classic. me it was an intimate and beautiful wedding. I primarily photograph high school seniors and dancers, but I do take on a few weddings each year if I feel like we would be a good fit.
Jax: What has been your favorite experience as a wedding photographer?
Melissa: My favorite experience as a photographer has to be from a wedding I did a few years ago. My bride’s grandfather had written her a letter before he passed away. The family kept it a secret until her wedding day. At her reception her bridesmaids and the flower girl hand delivered the letter to her. It was such an emotional thing to watch. It was definitely something I will never forget.
Jax: What do you love most about photographing weddings?
Melissa: I love emotions, it is just that simple. Seeing the groom cry or watching a mom shed tears of pure happiness for her daughter that is what it is all about.
Jax: What’s your favorite moment at a wedding?
Melissa: The kiss. You can just sense the anticipation from the bride and groom to make it final.
Jax: Aside from weddings, what are some other hobbies/hidden talents?
Melissa: Like I said earlier I love working with high school seniors. They are my passion and where most of my work is concentrated at this moment. Beyond photography my extra time is watching my daughter dance and my son traveling for soccer. Between my two children there isn’t much time for anything else, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Jax: Even though most of your time is spent on Dance and Family Portrait, the weddings you’ve done in the past are beautiful. Thank you so much for joining our team and can’t wait to see how you capture my design.
